about

I recently discovered these tracks lurking on an old har drive - I thought they'd been lost to the flow of normal life, with all its abandonment of IT at various stages throughout the proceedings. They stem from my earliest digital recording set ups - there was only one other bit of kit that pre-dated my first music PC and that was a sony minidisc 4 track - but that's a whole other story. My first PC ran cubase with a basic 2 I/O audio card (think it was an M-Audio Audiophile). I collected all the free VST's I could lay my hands on and attempted to complete various tasks and projects. I remember insisting on some video projects that I write and record a bespoke piece of music for the video...with some very mixed results. I never really felt like I mastered this set up, but I think that was mostly down to my own lack of experience. I didn't really settle into using a DAW as an instrument until I got Logic X on my MacBookPro - TIme Emergent being my first completed project with that set up. However, re-discovering these tracks, I recognise some real value in some of that early work. One interesting thing is that these are all tracks that were produced for myself - sketches and doodles without a specific home. Two of them went on to form foundations for tracks on Time Emergent too. However, the real reason this collection exists is for the final track, View from a Plane. It was the first track that I created that I actually would listen to regularly...and its title was earned one day listening to the track whilst looking down over far off distant lands on some long haul flight. There was something about the feeling of observing, flying, dreaming, hoping and belonging, all wrapped up into one, simple piece of music. I hope you find something that you like.
