Yuri Gagarin became the first man to leave the earth's atmosphere, the first man in space in April 1961. It meant Russia took the first prize in the space race against America. He became a national hero.
The story that most stands out for me about Yuri concerns Soyuz 1 - a manned mission in 1967, carrying friend Vladimir Komarov. It was well known amongst the crews and technical team that there were faults with the flight that were likely to end in a fatality if it went ahead. Yuri, serving on the back up crew attempted to have Komarov bumped from the mission, believing that the powers that be would never let the flight go ahead with a national hero on board. His efforts were blocked, the mission went ahead and Komarov was killed when his capsule crashed on re-entry.
